Rest In Peace ‘Jason Mizell’ (1965-2002)
Oct 30th
Today marks the 8-year anniversary of the death of Jam Master Jay.
Run DMC was the first rap group I ever heard and Jam Master Jay is the reason I started DJing. I remember going on road trips as a kid and they would sell these Best Of “Profile” tapes at the gas stations. I had every one of those things and it was there that I was introduced to groups like Dana Dane, Pumpkin & The Profile All-Stars and the legendary Run DMC and their DJ, Jam Master Jay. I loved the raps but I loved the way he would make those scratch noises even more. I was addicted after that.
I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times — was one of the nicest dudes I ever met in this rap game. It’s a shame that his murder has yet to be solved and an even bigger shame that he is still not with us today. He was the quintessential DJ performer and knew how to control a crowd with his party rocking skills like no other.
Rest in Peace Jason Mizell – you are gone but will never be forgotten.

The homie David Ma of ‘Nerdtorious’ fame just did the cover story on Gregory Isaacs for the new Wax Poetics reggae issue.
