These Are The Breaks
“These Are The Breaks” Pt. 15 | The Pharcyde — She Said (Jay-Dee Remix)
Feb 5th
One of my favorite Dilla remixes (when he was still known as Jay-Dee). Those neck snappin’ snares and intricate layers were a major influence on my own production style — so unique and ahead of its time (this was 17 years ago folks — James Yancey didn’t start with Donuts). Enjoy the breakdown…
The Pharcyde — She said (Jay Dee Remix)
Gato Barbieri — El Arriero
Steve Miller Band — Space Intro
My favorite part of this remix is when he slips in a tiny part of one of my all time favorite songs. An insight into just how deep his layering really was…
Heatwave — Star of the Story

“These Are The Breaks” Pt. 11 | Ramsey Lewis — The Mighty Quinn
Apr 4th
I remember when I first copped this record during my diggin’ for jazz breaks phase (never really ended honestly). This album is beautiful, as is most of Ramsey Lewis’ work from the late 60s and the decade after. This is def a favorite and I love how two absolutely classic Hip-Hop tracks used two entirely different parts of the song. Ironically, Mr. Lewis is one of the most outspoken dudes out there shittin’ on sampling, still to this day. If you only knew Ramsey — if you only knew
Ramsey Lewis — The Mighty Quinn
Leaders Of The New School — Case Of The P.T.A.
The Pharcyde — Officer
“These Are The Breaks” Pt. 9 | Common — Sweet
Jan 11th

Common — Sweet
Doris & Kelley — You Don’t Have To Worry
This OG is a 7 on one of my favorite labels of all time, Brunswick, which boasts numerous other acts, Young Holt Unlimited being my main choice.
“These Are The Breaks” Pt. 8 | Snoop — G’z & Hustlas + Beatnuts — Hit Me With That
Dec 6th
Snoop Doggy Dogg — G’z & Hustlas
Bernard Wright — Haboglabotribin’
And just for kicks, here’s a classic that uses the Snoop joint:
The Beatnuts — Hit Me With That
The Beatnuts — Hit Me With That (Instrumental)
And it’s sources…
David Axelrod — Holy Thursday
Monty Alexander — Love & Happiness
And finally, here’s a ‘Blend Kings‘ edit DJ Enki and I made a while back, gridded out for cleaner mixing:

“These Are The Breaks” Pt. 6 | Average White Band — “School Boy Crush”
Oct 23rd
This track has been sampled a million times (rumor has it this is where Extra P originally got his sleigh bells from) but I wanted to focus on a discovery I just came across last night at ‘The 45 Sessions‘. I was playing the 7 and getting ready to mix in Rakim’s ‘Microphone Fiend’ and heard the vocal that i’ve been pondering forever…
4:16…
Average White Band — School Boy Crush
I love that Large Pro used it in such a classy and subdued way and the fact that I realized it on my own without the help of the google machine adds some points as well. Here’s the rest…
Hair Soundtrack (Japanese version) — Dead End
Gary Byrd — Soul Travelin’ Pt. I (The G.B.E.)
This is why Extra P will forever be a legend and why Illmatic will always be our Sgt. Pepper’s…
