Rest In Peace ‘Jason Mizell’ (1965-2002)

Today marks the 8-year anniversary of the death of Jam Master Jay.

Run DMC was the first rap group I ever heard and Jam Master Jay is the reason I started DJing. I remember going on road trips as a kid and they would sell these Best Of “Profile” tapes at the gas stations. I had every one of those things and it was there that I was introduced to groups like Dana Dane, Pumpkin & The Profile All-Stars and the legendary Run DMC and their DJ, Jam Master Jay. I loved the raps but I loved the way he would make those scratch noises even more. I was addicted after that.

I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times — was one of the nicest dudes I ever met in this rap game. It’s a shame that his murder has yet to be solved and an even bigger shame that he is still not with us today. He was the quintessential DJ performer and knew how to control a crowd with his party rocking skills like no other.

Rest in Peace Jason Mizell – you are gone but will never be forgotten.

Just got added to the Ninja Tune 20-Year Anniversary party at 1015 Folsom this friday. Super last minute so you won’t see me on any promo but i’m doing the opening set in the main room just before my homie Centipede and sharing the stage with, well, check the line-up below…

I’m very honored to be a part of this cuz like any DJ who grew up in the scene in the 90s here in the Bay and was into turntable culture, heady shit and records you loved Ninja Tune and practically everything they released. This was one of my all time favorites, an amazing cover of the main theme from the classic Hip-Hop flick Wildstyle, released on the volume 2 of the infamous Headz compilations…

I heard over 5000 people RSVP’d for this event – maybe i’ll see you friday.

One take.

The homie Locksmith of ‘The Frontline’ fame slaughters a ‘Left’ produced beat [sampling Gary Jules' cover of Tears For Fears' "Mad World"] from the forthcoming ‘Frank The Rabbit’ album.

All one take.

Richmond stand up!

RIP Gregory Isaacs

One of the best of all time – RIP Gregory Isaacs.

Here’s two of my favorites:

Gregory Isaacs ~ Lonely Days

Gregory Isaacs ~ Cool Down The Pace (10″ Mix)

The homie David Ma of ‘Nerdtorious’ fame just did the cover story on Gregory Isaacs for the new Wax Poetics reggae issue.

Never before seen footage!

Not that big a deal actually – first time I layed my eyes on this tho. Someone posted this on Facebook – some rare footage of myself and DJ Goldenchyld on our Amoeba SF in-store stop of our ‘Lookout Weekend’ tour back in 2007. We had a dope set that we crafter together meticulously and the tour was on some true DIY shit – whole lotta fun.

Enjoy!

In case you never heard the mix we did for it, it’s available here and for free.
