“These Are The Breaks” Pt. 11 | Ramsey Lewis — The Mighty Quinn

I remember when I first copped this record during my diggin’ for jazz breaks phase (never really ended honestly). This album is beautiful, as is most of Ramsey Lewis’ work from the late 60s and the decade after. This is def a favorite and I love how two absolutely classic Hip-Hop tracks used two entirely different parts of the song. Ironically, Mr. Lewis is one of the most outspoken dudes out there shittin’ on sampling, still to this day. If you only knew Ramsey — if you only knew

So here’s the scoop — my brethren over at TRUE CLOTHING have been doing a ‘Clerks’ mix concept for quite a while now, where they pair up DJs and store employees whilst making beautiful music together.
Concept is simple — employee picks music, DJ mixes it. Not so simple, mixing it. Taking another persons choice selections and making it work can be quite challenging as a DJ because it’s not you choosing the tracks, simply choosing the way to mix ‘em.
Anyway, I love a challenge and the mastermind behind TRUE himself, DJ Dark Money aka Michael Brown, chose me to do his and the rest is history. And to boot, in-house TRUE designer and genius extraordinaire Joshua Bruner did the design work and it’s not only brilliant, it’s funny as shit.
